چکیده

The most difficult challenge in upgrading CATV networks for broadband interactive multimedia services lies in the upstream communication path from the customer premises to the headend. This article points out that upstream cable modems are first-of-a-kind modems, which feature intelligent physical layer on top of the basic high speed modem functionalities. After introducing the topic we elaborate the design of a QAM upstream cable modem that combines high spectral efficiency with fast acquisition. The design will be treated, together with the advanced design methodology used for system description, simulation, verification and implementation.

Experimental evaluation of DOCSIS 1.1 upstream performance

Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) is one of the many last mile technologies intended to provide Internet access and packet-based services to the customer. DOCSIS uses the widely deployed hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) network as the physical link between multiple cable modems (CMs) and the cable modem termination system (CMTS). This paper presents the upstream performance of DOC...

Transient analysis of DOCSIS 1.1 cable modem networks

In this paper we seek to identify the primary factors that determine the time-to-recovery of a network of DOCSIS-compliant cable modems (CM's). DOCSIS, which stands for Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Speci cations [6], is an emerging industry standard for data services over the cable TV infrastructure. According to the speci cation, individual cable modems must compete for access to the upst...

Performance of Voip Services on a Docsis Network Targeted by a Denial of Service Attack

Over 48 million end users worldwide utilize cable modems as their means of accessing the Internet at high speeds. Networks which provide access via cable modems utilize Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) as their means of network management. As availability and utilization to the Internet increases (especially at high speeds supported by broadband access), so does the opp...

Bandwidth scheduling for multi-channel packet cable telephony

Cable networks have evolved from offering broadcast services to providing high rate two-way data services. In the next step, cable operators intend to use Voice over IP (VoIP) to provide cable telephony services. In a cable network the users are connected to the headend through a cable modem. The headend is responsible for allocating upstream bandwidth to the various cable modems. Each cable mo...

Active Queue Management (AQM) Based on Proportional Integral Controller Enhanced PIE) for Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) Cable Modems

Cable modems based on Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) provide broadband Internet access to over one hundred million users worldwide. In some cases, the cable modem connection is the bottleneck (lowest speed) link between the customer and the Internet. As a result, the impact of buffering and bufferbloat in the cable modem can have a significant effect on user experienc...
